Financial Literacy is a skill that is imperative for success in life but is seldom taught/included in school curricula. It is one of the most important things a child can learn to prepare him/her for the future. Understanding how money works, why it is important to save early, and how to avoid huge financial disasters is incredibly important.
In this course, which is taught in “game format” students will face real-life scenarios and have the opportunity to make decisions immersing themselves in an experience where they learn everything related to personal finance.
Each child will choose a “random” career (from choices) and be assigned a corresponding first year income for said career. Additionally, they will have matching student loan payments based on their career. They will also choose where they want to live.
Then, each week, we will highlight a topic, exploring information and allowing them to make personal decisions about their “real life.” They will keep track of their budget, bills, and expenses and see how they do at the end of the ten weeks. Will they be able to cover everything with their monthly salary OR will they run out of money?
Students will encounter actual financial situations that “pop up” in real life and decide how to navigate through these.
Most adults, including myself, wish they had learned about managing their money in school and this class aims to do that. I’m excited to add this interactive, transformation tool to SFLHRC so that students can reap the benefits of a more financially literature future!
NOTE TO PARENTS: This is an interactive class with guidance from the instructor. Students will have the opportunity to interact, discuss, and socialize while learning to become financially responsible with their choices.

This introductory workshop will have students use a ESP32-based learning kit to simulate features which are now being used by smart home technologies. In many homes, items such as ovens, refrigerators, lighting, and alarm systems can be accessed and controlled via one’s smartphone or computer. The learning kit demonstrates how these technological advances have brought many people a cozier and more comfortable life.
Everything is controlled via smartphone/iPad app, and data will be displayed on an integrated 1602 LCD display (installed on the home model itself) in real time. Motion, steam, and temperature/humidity sensors send data to the microcontroller, which then signals various devices in the smart home to either turn on or off as needed.
Students will also be introduced to tools allowing them to control the smart home via three programming languages: C language, Mixly, and Scratch.
SFLHRC will be purchasing a kit for each student as part of the tuition. The kit includes everything needed, including the microcontroller, sensors, modules, hardware, cables, wiring, fittings, and tools needed to assemble and configure the smart house.
The only items not supplied are six (6) AA batteries, which are required to power the hardware. Each student is expected to bring their own.

Junior Achievement BizTown combines a 7 – 8 session learning experience with a day-long visit to Coconut Creek, where the students visit and run a simulated town. This popular learning experience allows students to operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, and vote for mayor. Students are able to connect the dots between what they learn and the real world.
Our visit to BizTown is scheduled for April 1, 2023, from 9:00AM – 1:00PM in Coconut Creek (Broward County), Florida.
Parents are NOT permitted to attend the April 1st session, as per Junior Achievement. We have TEN homeschooling chaperones, including our three directors, who will be with our group. You may either stay outside the doors all day and wait, OR drop off and pick up – it is your choice.
